The saddest aspect of Jewish poverty is that we who are surviving below the poverty line are rejected by the American Jewish community, and suffer from the prejudices and discrimination of anti-Semitism disproportionately. We are criticized when we can't join a congregation or contribute to holiday funds or charitable causes because of our own poverty. Don't we know that Jewish poverty is shameful and reflects badly on the entire community? We must protect the image of prosperity among American Jewry by keeping silent and hidden!
